Let me answer straight away, because I know you did not come here for a lecture. With me, you wait a maximum of 90 days for your wedding photos, usually less, and the exact delivery date is written into the contract, not left hanging in the air. I hear the question of how long you wait for wedding photos at almost every meeting with a couple, and I am glad it comes up, because this is one of those topics where it is easiest to get burned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It varies across the industry. I know couples who received their gallery after a month, and others who were still emailing a year later asking if there was any news. The difference is almost never that one photographer works hard and the other is lazy. It comes down to what was agreed before the wedding, and whether anything was agreed at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This article is about where the waiting time for wedding photos actually comes from, what really happens during it, what has to be written into the contract, and when a warning light should go on for you. At the end, I describe step by step how it works with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The simplest answer: I am working on them. But I know that sounds like an excuse, so let me break it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A wedding produces several thousand frames. That is not an exaggeration, it is simple arithmetic for a dozen or so hours of photographing. The first stage is selection: I sit down and go through everything, frame by frame. From every scene, only the shots actually worth looking at remain. The rest goes: the fifth version of the same smile, an uncle blinking, someone walking into the frame mid step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second stage is editing. Every photograph you receive has been through my hands. I do not run galleries through an automated process, and I do not hand over unedited files straight from the camera. Colour, contrast, cropping, consistency across the whole set. I like muted colours and black and white, and I make sure the gallery from the whole day reads as one story, not a collection of photos from five different cameras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a single wedding, that is weeks of work, not one evening over coffee. And that is the honest answer to why it cannot be done in a week, while also photographing another wedding every Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If the editing alone takes weeks, where do the differences between couples come from? Three things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The date of your wedding.<\/strong> This is the biggest factor, and I write about it in more detail below. A wedding in May and a wedding in August sit in two very different places in the queue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The scope of the material.<\/strong> Coverage on its own is one amount of work. Coverage plus an outdoor session on a separate date is another. The more material there is, the more selecting and editing it needs. It is a simple relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The photographer’s organisation.<\/strong> And here is the real point. A photographer who knows how many weddings they take on each season, and how long one delivery takes, can give you a date and keep it. A photographer who takes every booking and figures it out as they go will not give you a date, because they do not know it themselves. So the answer to how long you wait for wedding photos says less about the calendar than about whether someone is in control of their own work. It is one of the questions worth asking any supplier, alongside what actually makes up the price of the coverage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is something I prefer to write about plainly, before anyone discovers it in September and is caught off guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In July and August I work almost every Saturday. That means material from consecutive weddings comes in faster than it can physically be delivered. A week only has so many hours, and between Saturdays there is still sleeping, eating and, occasionally, seeing family to fit in. So I deliver weddings from the height of the season in autumn. Not because I have forgotten about you, but because ahead of you in the queue are couples who got married earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The queue is fair: whoever had their wedding first gets their photos first. I do not jump between galleries depending on who emails more often. I know waiting is hard, especially when friends who married in May are already showing off their gallery. But a May wedding had an empty queue ahead of it, and an August wedding has the whole of July ahead of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The good news: you know all of this in advance. The delivery date we write into the contract already takes into account where your wedding falls in the season. I do not promise something in February that cannot be delivered in August. This is also one of the reasons it is worth booking your date early<\/a>, especially if a faster delivery time matters to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes I am asked: can we have everything that was taken? I understand where that comes from. It sounds like more for the same money. In practice, it would be the worst gift I could give you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Several thousand frames from a wedding are not several thousand different photographs. They are a few hundred moments, each of which I photographed several times over, to make sure at least one version is sharp, with open eyes and a good expression. Most of the rejected frames are exactly that: repeats of the same moment, closed eyes, shots caught mid movement. Nobody wants to look at eight versions of the same toast, seven of which are worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Selection is part of my work, not a shortcut around it. You get a gallery you can look through in one evening and that you want to come back to, not a folder to dig through out of a sense of duty. And every photograph in that gallery has been edited. In my packages, that is a minimum of 500, 650 or 850 photographs, depending on the option, and it usually comes out higher. That is not a small number. It is a great many good photographs, none of which you need to be embarrassed about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is worth separating two things, because in conversation they often blur together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A sneak peek is a handful, or a dozen or so, photographs delivered quickly after the wedding. It is a nice thing to have: something to put on your phone, show your parents, set as a wallpaper. Some photographers send one, some do not, and either is fine, as long as you know where you stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A full gallery is something else: the whole set of material after selection and editing, from getting ready to the bouquet and veil ceremony. And here is a trap worth watching for when comparing offers. “First photos within a week” sounds great, but it says nothing about when you will get the rest. It happens that a quick sneak peek buys a photographer months of peace, because the couple already has something in hand and feels awkward chasing for more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So ask about two dates separately: when the first photos arrive, and when the full set does. That second date is the more important one, and it is the one that should be written into the contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A contract is the place where polite promises turn into commitments. When it comes to the delivery date, check three things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n First: whether a delivery date is there at all.<\/strong> You would be surprised how often it is not. A contract without a delivery date is a contract in which you have agreed to wait indefinitely, you just do not know it yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Second: whether it has an upper limit.<\/strong> “About three months” is not a deadline, it is a mood. A deadline sounds like this: within 90 days of the wedding date. The word “within” does all the work, because it marks the day after which you have the right to say: the contract says otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Third: what the deadline is counted from.<\/strong> From the wedding date, not from “the start of editing” or any other moment that cannot be verified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With me, the contract states a specific deadline: within 90 days of the wedding. I usually deliver sooner, but I would rather promise less and deliver more than the other way round. While we are at it: the contract also covers publication. Your photos go online only with your consent, never automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A few signals worth pausing on before you sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Honestly? Not much. And I would rather write that plainly than feed you tricks that do not work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Writing to me often will not speed up the delivery. Every email I reply to is time I am not spending editing photographs. Asking “is there anything nice to see yet” will not speed it up either, though I understand the temptation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What actually helps? Two things, both to be done before the wedding, not after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Choosing a date outside the height of the season.<\/strong> If you are still planning your date and a fast delivery matters to you, a wedding in May, June or September simply has a shorter queue ahead of it than one in the first half of August. I am not encouraging anyone to move their wedding date around a photographer’s calendar, but since you are asking what speeds things up, this is it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Talking about your expectations before signing the contract.<\/strong> If you need the photos by a specific moment, say so at the meeting, not a week after the wedding. That way, we can talk about it calmly and work out what is realistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The rest is down to the photographer. And that is how it should be, because they are the one who was paid for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let me gather everything in one place, so you do not have to jump around the text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I have been photographing since 2012, weddings since 2018. On the wedding day I am with you the whole time, from getting ready to the bouquet and veil ceremony, usually until one in the morning. I work with two cameras, and every photograph is saved to two memory cards at the moment it is taken. After the wedding, the material goes onto hard drives and into a cloud backup, and I keep it for a long time after the gallery is delivered. All of this exists so that the question “will we get our photos” does not come up at all, and the only question left is “when”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And when? Within 90 days of the wedding, usually sooner. We write the specific date into the contract. I deliver July and August weddings in autumn, because at the height of the season I photograph almost every Saturday, and the queue does what queues do. I mention this at our meeting, before you sign anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You get a gallery after selection: a minimum of 500, 650 or 850 edited photographs, depending on the package, usually more.
